CHAPTER FIVE

“Your mother is the alpha female of the Vlodiks … you are a Vlodik?” I cried, my mouth dropping open.

“Are you catching flies? Don’t look so shocked, Kristen. I am half Lycan—half Vlodik. My birth mother came down with the rare strain of the parvovirus a few months ago, the same strain that wiped out many of the Lycan women some years back. She thought she was going to die. I guess when you are facing death you want to make amends, and she decided to find me and apologize for deserting me. Of course, she figured I was still with Caleb and she sent some of the pack to find and make contact with me. They watched and waited until I was running by myself one day, and then they made their approach,” Dorian nodded his head. “And I am truly glad they did. I am sick of the Lycans, just sick of them. They are weak-willed and spineless. I am glad that my real clan came for me. ”

“You have got to be kidding!” Thinking back, I remembered a few times when Dorian had disappeared for days, so this explained why. I assumed he had been out on a drinking binge, but he had probably been with the Vlodiks the whole time.

“At first I was not sure if I should join the Vlodik clan or not. But after Caleb refused to send a posse to hunt you down, I’d had enough. You are mine, Kristen. You chose me, and Caleb was just going to let you run off with Markus. Now I ask you, is that fair?”

I could hardly believe what Dorian was saying. He really, truly believed I should be his. It wasn’t just a matter of pride, he thought I was his intended because I chose him in that forced, hasty decision at the pack council.

“My decision to join the Vlodiks was made the day you freed Markus and left Camp Vickers, and Caleb told me to let the two of you go. By the way, how did you get Markus out of those chains?” Dorian waved his hand. “Nah, I guess you won’t tell me.”

A sigh of relief escaped my lips. It was good to know they hadn’t caught Todd and punished him for helping us. But my respite was short lived.

“I’ll get it out of you later. So, you see Kristen, this is your fault. If you had been a good girl and done the right thing, none of this would have happened.”

“But… I…” I couldn’t think of what to say.

“Now dear,” Dorian said patronizingly, “You did what you did. But it’s not too late. You can still come with me and you can make up for running off.” His eyes swept down my body, slowly and deliberately, and he licked his lips. “I can think of many things you can do to make me feel better about your behavior problem. And I know you will love every minute of it.”

I narrowed my eyes as I looked at him.
